The Sonic the Hedgehog series is one of the biggest video game properties in the world, with game sales and mobile downloads totaling over 1.7 billion units since its debut in 1991.
In 1999 in the West, the franchise entered what fans know as the “modern” era of Sonic with the release of Sonic Adventure for the Sega Dreamcast. This was the first game in the series to feature an intricate storyline with full-fledged cutscenes and voice acting. Fans quickly grew attached to the portrayal of characters in the games that followed (Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes) - featuring Ryan Drummond as Sonic, David Humphrey as Shadow, and Scott Dreier as Knuckles. This era of Sonic - known as the “Adventure Era” or “Dreamcast Era” - is home to one of the most passionate sectors of fans in the series.
With each fan they meet at conventions, Ryan, David, and Scott are regularly reminded of how much these games shaped fans’ lives growing up and how impactful their performances of these characters were. This has led to a wildly dedicated fan base that has only grown bigger and stronger as these games find re-releases on modern gaming systems, impacting a whole new generation of fans.
